Rope flow exercises in the sea

flowropes

Ropeflow is the most fun I have had exercising, period. I know a lot of others feel the same. It makes movement fun and it affects how you move in the rest of your life (it has changed the way I dance, not sure if that´s for the better).

Learning the fundamentals and the transitions between them is satisfying and once you have done this you can start to freestyle or free flow. You can add your own style, even make up your own moves or tricks!

It is quite a niche sport but there are rope flow-ers around! There is a really supportive community on Instagram and it can be fun to do it with a friend and co-ordinate your moves.

Put on some music and get lost in the flow.

mobility

By performing figure of 8 patterns of movement, which are natural for the body but mostly unused by us today, the flow rope can perform myriad improvements in many areas of the body in terms of mobility.

Shoulder mobility is greatly improved through various moves, especially the dragon roll and hanumans dance. The turning and engagement of your core also enhances hip mobility and helps ease tension in the back and warm the muscles up.

You can engage every muscle in the body if you incorporate footwork and whole body moves. Some rope flow-ers have used the flow rope use as a low impact tool to help them in their recovery from a shoulder injury.

remember, motion is lotion

coordination

I haven’t found a movement practise that requires the same amount of cohesion throughout the body. Your upper and lower body, as well as your left and right side have to work in near perfect harmony… Otherwise you may get hit.

The rope is a great teacher, it will tell you when you have done something wrong. This constant feedback is crucial to developing the coordination and proprioception to flow fluidy and freely.

This helps to integrate movement patterns that are not only useful for ropeflow, but can be applied to many other sports, such as boxing, tennis, cricket, golf, to name but a few.

anxiety and stress

Ropeflow requires a certain level of concentration which leaves less room for negative thoughts and worries to take the foreground in our minds.

This paired with the endorphin boosting effects of exercise lessens the negative effects of stress.

A well known psychologist called Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defines flow as “A state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter”. This flow state has been associated with great improvements in general wellbeing and happiness. As the name would suggest, flow rope is one of the optimal activities for achieving this. Have a look at the ropes we have on offer and begin your journey today!
